Preventative Stress posted by UNKNOWN

We all have had the experience where our children come home and tell us an assignment is due tomorrow which they have not started and must complete. They feel alot of stress and their stress becomes our stress. What is a parent to do? Do we help them to complete the assignment or let them deal with it themselves? My advice is to let them know if they are confused about it you will explain it better but do not do it for them. They have to realize that procrastination is not the way to go with schoolwork. If you get them out of this they won't learn this valuable lesson of organization and planning. When the assignment is completed I would explain to them the importance of not letting things go for the last minute. When this happens stress evolves and you can't be productive when you feel overwhelmed.Remind them to write things down in an agenda and to frequently check their agenda. Other than that there is nothing you can do . Kids have to learn to be responsible for their work and be independent. This will come in handy when the work load increases with the stress level in the later years.

When our kids come home upset and out of sorts , the first thing most of us want to do is encircle them and make it better; find out everything, and offer advice. I have been guilty of this with my older teens and my 11 year old son. It comes from the fact that we want so much for our children academically and socially that sometimes we might do too much too soon.
