School related stress is the most prevalent cause of academic failure in our schools .I believe it is on the rise due to the accelerated school curriculum and to the increase of standardized testing we see now.Kids are being tested earlier and more frequently now due to No child Left Behind.Six to ten million children are at risk for school related stress. You might ask what can we as parents do about it? We need to teach our children stress management strategies. We must do what the schools are not doing. The best way to relax is to do slow deep breathing twice a day . You should have them block out any negative thoughts when doing the breathing. Another wonderful way to help our children to relax is to let them exercise by running around outside or by playing a sport. This is the best way to release extra energy they might otherwise display as stress. They will feel less stress and stay physically fit at the same time. Everyone wins!! You will also see their focus return to their homework.

Failure can Lead to Success posted by UNKNOWN

Parents need to teach their children not to be scared of making a mistake or think of it as a failure. If children are told that mistakes are terrible this will increase their fear of making them and possibly cause them not to try new things. It must be stressed to children that they should not strive to be perfect but to do the best they can. Aiming for perfection can create depression in children as they get older. There was an interesting article in the July 2006 BusinessWeek that discussed how different smart companies have learned from their mistakes. If big companies run by influential people make mistakes that cost the company millions, why can't a child or teen be allowed to make a mistake? For example,Coca-Cola in 1985 rolled out a well-researched new formula they called New Coke. After 79 days they had to take it off the market due to very small sales. Children should be taught that mistakes are a learning situation that should be accepted. We all make them and we must persevere through the ups and downs to succeed in our goals.

How do We Learn Empathy posted by UNKNOWN

One of the most important values we can teach our children is the value of empathy towards others. Some kids have a natural tendency to feel this emotion, others need alittle help to bring it out. It is so important to learn this, for it contributes to better communication between people and probably cuts down on conflict between people. This is because if you can better put yourself into someone else's place you might not be so quick to criticize. We have to understand our own emotions quite well before we can understand how others feel. i always try to point things out to my kids how they can be more empathetic. For example, the other day my son came home and told me his friend was upset that he was not picked to be a safety patrol. My son had just finished being one and was glad it was over. I asked him what if anything did he tell this boy who was upset?
