We read again and again about the increase in teen suicide and shootings in schools. What causes this? An increase in stress among our kids? Lower self-esteem?? What is the solution and what can a parent do to help? Schools are not offering a solution.
I feel the answer rests with the parents. There are steps to follow to help children regain some composure in this world. First off, parents need to encourage children to slow down their hectic pace by taking a few minutes each day to take a look at nature outside or just to plain play outside. While doing this take a few minutes to take deep breaths. Taking slow ,deep breaths cause relaxation to occur. They should take these few minutes away from watching T.V. or doing the computer. Also, parents should look at the after school activities their children have. Are they doing an activity everyday after school? This running from one activity to another leaves little time for homework and for just relaxing. Set up a priority list and let something go that is way down on the list. This will free up your child to just have down time which will create more relaxation for both children and parents. Their anxiety levels will diminish and I feel this will make them happier and hopefully help their peace level. They also might have the time to pursue a hobby they love which will help their self-esteem. Try it and see. You will see a difference. What do you have to lose?
