Is our happiness pre-determined by our genes or can we try to be happy? I feel that one can and must choose to be happy. There are many ways to accomplish this. First off, surround yourself with people who are optimistic thinkers. If you pick on people who are negative about things that will rub off onto you and they will drag you down , too. You need to practice positive thinking yourself by repeating positive self-talk , such as, "I can do this, "I am attractive." When you make a mistake , say to yourself , "Let me learn from this and move on, everyone makes mistakes." These positive statements keep your self-esteem up. Set new goals for yourself each month. Also, it helps if you take thirty minutes a day to do physical exercise of some sort; such as fast walking, running, playing ball or soccer. Just taking a quick bike ride is wonderful for your mind and body. If you cut down on your many extra-curricular activities you will feel less stressed and happier, too. Try all of the above and see how happy you will be!

Teen suicide is up and so is the high school drop out rate. More people are taking anti-depressants and being diagnosed with attention deficit . What can a parent do to help themselves and their children? There is a simple solution to try. Everyday count your blessings and write down the positive things about your day and yourself(use our Positive Thoughts Journal). Try this for a week and see the benefits. Too many focus on the negative things that go wrong and their mistakes and can't see the wonderful things they can do. I promise that if you try this change for a week you will feel happier and less depressed.

We all want to be happy, but how can we achieve it? I truly feel it is simple and involves common sense. If we do what we are passionate about and truly love we will be happy and do it well. So many of us fail to follow this advice. We pursue activities, one after another, day after day, because our friends do it or becuase it will look good on a resume. We rush around doing things ,having little time for ourselves and our family and end up being stressed out. When we are stressed out it can also lead to depression. This depression can result in taking medicine. Why not make a life change and start to slow down and follow our true passions? I have done this and it truly makes a big difference. What do you have to lose if you try for a week and a half cutting back on your activities and do only the one you truly love? You will feel better and be happier and less stressed!! Try it and let me know what happens.
