It is so important to stay in shape and watch what you eat for the health of your heart. Too many people , including children are overweight. It is a serious and growing worldwide problem. Also, stress in school and life has increased, too. More teens are depressed then before and have type 2 diabetes. What to do?

School related stress is the most prevalent cause of academic failure in our schools .I believe it is on the rise due to the accelerated school curriculum and to the increase of standardized testing we see now.Kids are being tested earlier and more frequently now due to No child Left Behind.Six to ten million children are at risk for school related stress.You might ask what can we as parents do about it? We need to teach our children stress management strategies. We must do what the schools are not doing. The best way to relax is to do slow deep breathing twice a day . You should have them block out any negative thoughts when doing the breathing. Another wonderful way to help our children to relax is to let them exercise by running around outside or by playing a sport. This is the best way to release extra energy they might otherwise display as stress. They will feel less stress and stay physically fit at the same time. Everyone wins!! You will also see their focus return to their homework.

The best way to keep one's focus and keep stress at bay is to exercise everyday without fail. This has helped George W. Bush keep from going crazy or getting hypertension during the many problems during his term. He makes it a point to take a break from work and exercise and then go back. At the age of 60 he mountain bikes for two hours. Many of us make excuses that we don't have time to spend on ourselves to exercise or pursue a hobby. But, it is very important to make the time. In the end we will gain the benefits that exercise has to offer. We will be able to focus more on our tasks and be better able to maintain the stress we might face.We will also be healthier. It is so important to make sure that our children exercise also everyday to keep fit and keep stress down. There is a growing obesity problem among children and teens in this country and something must be done. Kids are getting serious adult diseases due to their obesity. We as parents, have the power to make sure our children get away from the T.V. or computer and get outside and run or play basketball. In the end , our children will be thanking us for this most needed break.
